Shine the Light 2015

We just got back from our 5th trip to the Dominican with Shine the Light. It was a total last minute decision but we are so very glad that we went. We were so pumped to go again and have our kids experience it with us. It was so fun to watch them take everything in and to experience a totally different country and language.

In total there were 33 people on this team and together we built two houses, treated hundreds of people at our medical clinics, trained local pastors, and built meaningful relationships. Charity, from Just Breathe Aesthetics here in Winnipeg, trained 12 women how to do professional manicures and pedicures. She taught them basic business skills on starting their own business so that these women can help provide for their families. I got to interview a few of the ladies at the end of the week and they were so very excited to be able to help contribute to their families.

We get so busy here in North America. Running from here to there and buying what we think we need. We work more to give our kids more opportunities when perhaps it would be more beneficial to just spend more time with them.  The lesson I always seem to be reminded of when I go to the Dominican is to SLOW DOWN. One night we drove through the very dark village as there are no street lights and very little electricity and I saw a group of neighbours playing dominoes together…enjoying each others company. The Dominicans truly take time for each other and they enjoy the beauty in the moment. Before I left for this trip I said to Davo, ” I just really want to live in the moment.” I didn’t want to think of what was next or plan what should be happening, I wanted to just enjoy the present. The Dominicans model that so well.

They work long and hard hours with very little pay and yet they have the brightest, sweetest smile for you every time you walk by. They have very little, yet they bring you gifts. They welcome you into their homes, offer you their food and take care of your children. They have learned the beauty of living in community and the art of simplicity.

These trips will change your life and you’ll want to keep going back. Check out www.shinethelight.ca if you’d like to make a difference and give back from the much we’ve been given here in North America.

Love’s gotta look like something.
